As the rain hammered relentlessly on the windscreen and the headlights barely penetrated the gloom, the sense of trepidation and dare I say it, helplessness, was palpable. After a long day of trains, planes and automobiles, this was not the Icelandic welcome our guests had in mind. I made an inadequate attempt to lift the mood but only as the lights of our hotel came into view with safety and sustenance assured, could I sense a collective sigh of relief.

Winter Iceland: Phew!

Phew. I’ve said it before but Iceland is a Phew kind of place. Our recent winter landscape tour to the island had a few Phews along the way. Relief Phews (the weather was generally benign), surprise Phews (there had been a lot of snow in the south), desperate Phews (where the hell have all the beached icebergs gone?) and Phews of admiration for what is a landscape beyond comparison.

Thetta reddast is a well known saying in Iceland. Roughly translated it means don’t worry, everything thing will work out OK in the end. It’s more than a phrase, it’s an attitude or even a philosophy, and one I had to keep reminding myself of when setting up the Northshots Arctic Fox Bootcamp.
