Phew. I’ve said it before but Iceland is a Phew kind of place. Our recent winter landscape tour to the island had a few Phews along the way. Relief Phews (the weather was generally benign), surprise Phews (there had been a lot of snow in the south), desperate Phews (where the hell have all the beached icebergs gone?) and Phews of admiration for what is a landscape beyond comparison.

I've always loved backlighting. It doesn't work with everything but with crested tits, it most definitely does. That cheeky little mohican really stands out with late (or early) winter light filtering through the delicate feathers. Setting up our crested tit hide several years ago, we were at pains to ensure a backlit shot was possible

Last month myself and fellow guide Mark Hamblin set off on the arduous journey from Inverness to London to Salt Lake City to Bozeman. Three flights, four airports, two body scanners and several questionable airplane meals later, we were on the fringes of the world’s first National Park.
