Creative Cairngorms Colour

Cairngorms National Park, Scotland

  • Capture the colours and moods of autumn in the UK’s wildest National Park.
  • Dawn and dusk excursions.
  • Autumn colours with misty lochs and meandering burns on our doorstep.
  • Night-time photography without light pollution.
  • Technique-intensive tuition in the field.
  • House party with great food and hospitality.

As the birch woods of the Cairngorms turn to brilliant gold and the high tops are dusted with the first snowfall of late autumn, the Cairngorms National Park becomes a nature photographer’s paradise. Ethereal mists cloak mirror-calm lochs and ancient Scots pines, withered over three or more centuries, stand sentinel silhouetted against fiery sunsets. Crystal clear rivers cascade their way through ancient Caledonian pine forests, which have stood for 5,000 years. At this time of the year, the Scottish Highlands is a landscape of captivating beauty, enhanced by clarity of light unique in the UK.

This weekend house party has an emphasis on learning and exposure to new ideas. If you worry your photography has fallen into a rut, this weekend will send you away inspired. Through demonstration, practice and discussion you will be encouraged to try techniques, both while shooting and in post- production, that may be beyond your usual repertoire. There are many great locations within a short drive of our base so you’ll not only be learning, but producing lovely work too.

Niall Benvie

Niall Benvie

Niall has guided tours and taught workshops during much of his 23-year career as a professional outdoor photographer and writer. Over that time, he's retained the capacity to remember what it's like to learn things for the first time, and finds new ways to explain them. He's known as an innovator in his field and doesn't hold back when it comes to sharing his knowledge, experience and ideas. As a photographer working for a wide range of clients, he's learned to make strong images regardless of the conditions.

Charlotte Benvie

Charlotte has extensive experience of looking after and catering for groups, from school children to race-goers. And she's no mean photographer either. She helps to keep things running smoothly in the field, as well as cooking to a very high standard (she was in series 8 of Masterchef) for our house party tours. Charlotte grew up in a family where being out in nature was the norm so she's just as comfortable on a storm-lashed beach as she is in her kitchen where she makes award-winning chocolates.

Our accommodation is a lovely converted steading at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains. The Steading is comfortable and full of character - specially designed for photographic house parties. There are wonderful views from the two-tier lounge where we enjoy evening presentations over coffee. We all eat together around our huge farmhouse dining table, where a glass (or two) of wine can be enjoyed with a superb dinner. We have a range of single, double and twin rooms, all with private facilities*. Kick off your shoes and make yourself at home!

*Two of our single rooms share a bathroom. Rooms will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Meals are informal and will be taken within our accommodation. We can almost always accommodate specific dietary requirements - just tell us on the booking form and we’ll make sure you get what you want.

Most sites are accessible via a short walk but some require a reasonable level of fitness. You should be able to walk up to 1km over uneven ground.

Weather is very changeable in Scotland and although it is often warm and sunny, rain, strong winds and even snow are possible. Temperatures are likely to range from 5c to 20c.

Meeting up and saying goodbye

Your accommodation will be ready at 5pm on Day 1. There is plenty of parking on site. The tour ends after breakfast on Day 4 (approx.10am).

Our guide for this tour, Niall Benvie, has many years of photographic tour-leading experience. For those who would like assistance, he will take you through both technical and practical aspects of this type of photography and will be on hand to help you get the most from your time spent with us.

Giving Back

We take our responsibility as a tour operator very seriously and are conscious of our impact on the environment. Not only do we strive to minimise this impact in a variety of ways, we donate a proportion of our income to a select number of conservation initiatives.
