Torridon House Party
Torridon and Beinn Eighe, Scotland
- Dramatic mountain landscapes.
- Early autumn colours in Britain’s oldest National Nature Reserve.
- Loch reflections and waterfalls.
- Learn creative techniques including light painting and field studio work.
- Coastal landscapes and wild beaches.
- House party in our own lodge with great cooking and hospitality.
This is a landscape where high, rugged mountains fill the horizon. But unlike many parts of the Highlands, it is a forested one too and between the quartzite massif of Beinn Eighe and the expanse of Loch Maree at its foot, is a pine and birch wood unique in the UK in the richness of its lichens and mosses. While there are lots of details to photograph here and on the beach beside our accommodation, there are also many iconic views - of Loch Torridon, Liatach and Slioch, mountains that stand sentinel over this ancient landscape.
The weather here is highly changeable, making for exciting conditions to work in, usually with a few rainbows too! We extend the length of some of our days by light painting - putting the spotlight on a variety of subjects from an isolated pine to a well-known little red-roofed cottage. And after dinner in our fabulous base near Gairloch, we will have time to explore post-production techniques in Lightroom.
With exclusive occupation of carefully selected lodges, each offering a high degree of comfort and set in stunning locations, we are able to tailor our photographic forays according to the best light and time of day. Meals are cooked fresh by our own live-in chef and can be timed to offer maximum flexibility. Our house parties combine serious photography with serious fun.

Niall has guided tours and taught workshops during much of his 23-year career as a professional outdoor photographer and writer. Over that time, he's retained the capacity to remember what it's like to learn things for the first time, and finds new ways to explain them. He's known as an innovator in his field and doesn't hold back when it comes to sharing his knowledge, experience and ideas. As a photographer working for a wide range of clients, he's learned to make strong images regardless of the conditions.
Charlotte has extensive experience of looking after and catering for groups, from school children to race-goers. And she's no mean photographer either. She helps to keep things running smoothly in the field, as well as cooking to a very high standard (she was in series 8 of Masterchef) for our house party tours. Charlotte grew up in a family where being out in nature was the norm so she's just as comfortable on a storm-lashed beach as she is in her kitchen where she makes award-winning chocolates.
In a superbly equipped, private, beachside lodge close to the village of Gairloch, with views to the sea and the Torridon mountains beyond. Rooms are well appointed and comfortable. Some are en-suite, others share a nearby bathroom. There are large, airy lounge areas in which to relax and wi-fi is available. If you’re looking for a spectacular getaway, you’ve found it!
Meals are informal and will be taken within our accommodation. As this tour is aimed at serious photography, meals will not take priority and will be fitted in around prime photography time. We can almost always accommodate specific dietary requirements - just tell us on the booking form and we’ll make sure you get what you want.
We will not be walking long distances but a reasonable degree of agility is required working on rocky beaches and rough tracks.
Weather is very changeable in Scotland and although it is often warm and sunny, rain, strong winds and even snow are possible. Temperatures are likely to range from 5c to 20c.
Meeting up and saying goodbye
The tour starts from our base near Gairloch where your accommodation will be ready by 5pm on the day of arrival (directions will be provided). For those who wish to break the journey, we provide safe parking at our base in Glenfeshie in the Cairngorms from where we can provide a transfer to Gairloch. If you wish to park at our base, you should arrive at 1.30pm. We can collect from either Inverness airport (2.30pm) or Inverness train station (3.00pm). The drive to our accommodation is then approx. 1.5 hours.
On return, drop offs can be made in Inverness at roughly 11am and back at our base for around 1pm.
Our guide for this tour, Niall Benvie, has many years of photographic tour-leading experience. For those who would like assistance, he will take you through both technical and practical aspects of this type of photography and will be on hand to help you get the most from your time spent with us.
We take our responsibility as a tour operator very seriously and are conscious of our impact on the environment. Not only do we strive to minimise this impact in a variety of ways, we donate a proportion of our income to a select number of conservation initiatives.
